This document explains the circumstances in which the employers of teachers are legally required to make referrals to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and also the circumstances in which the DBS will bar a teacher from working with children.
The purpose of this document is to address some of the queries the Union receives about the disclosure of information (e.g., unsubstantiated allegations) to employers by the police. It supplements the NUT guidance document CRB Checks: Working with Children and Vulnerable Adults, which may be found at: www.teachers.org.
