Use of personal information
On joining the NUT, you provide personal information to us about yourself including, of course, some information which is legally regarded as “sensitive” – such as Union membership itself. The Union is advanced in the use of electronic technology and we hold members’ data on computerised records. It has, as you would expect, appropriate levels of security.
Part of your membership agreement with the Union is that we are authorised to process your data. This formal statement, issued under Data Protection legislation, informs you of the purposes for which we process the information held about you.
The information we hold will help develop and assist with a range of Union-based activities related to the running of the NUT, including the maintenance of records; implementing the Union’s policies; assisting with employment disputes; elections; ballots; group insurance claims; injury claims; casework; Union training; professional development; activities in relation to negotiation, representation, the internal democracy of the NUT, and the statistical profiling of sensitive data; and other benefits for members, dependants and supporters and as covered in our ‘notification’ to the Information Commissioner, as required under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998. For individuals enquiring about membership and/or previous members, the information will be held for a reasonable period to contact you about our services.
The data may also be used for communicating with members, including sending you copies of the Union’s magazine, ‘The Teacher’. As this contains commercial advertising, you do have the right to refuse it by informing the Records and Subscriptions Services Department.
Please note that this may then mean you will not receive valuable information about NUT activities, developments and policies which are reported and covered in ‘The Teacher’.
Subject to appropriate internal authorisations, your data may be made available to Union employees at Headquarters and regional offices and to constituent associations of the NUT. It may also be made available to other organisations associated with the NUT, including agents, contractors and other service providers not inviting commercial dealings with you. Where, occasionally, the NUT uses the services of such organisations they are contractually obliged to process your data in a secure and confidential manner under our strict instructions.
From time-to-time, we may wish to use the information, together with any other, for analysis and/or marketing purposes in respect of services offered to you by special arrangement with the NUT. In particular, this may benefit you, as the NUT can use your collective bargaining strength to negotiate attractive terms for the provision of a wide range of additional member benefits. This includes credit cards; personal loans; motor, general and other insurances; building society services; products and services subject to the Financial Services Acts; and such other products and services as may be negotiated from time-to-time to be accessible by NUT members. If you do not wish to be contacted in relation to these products and services, please inform the Records and Subscriptions Services Department.
Please note that this will preclude you from receiving details of any of these additional membership benefits and offers.
Information held in respect of ethnic or racial origin, disability, sexual orientation or transgender status will remain confidential on NUT files for monitoring and other relevant and appropriate purposes. While it is not a requirement of membership that such information be provided, it enables the NUT to provide members sharing particular equality characteristics with information that may be of interest to them, including for the purposes of elections to the NUT’s Executive.
