NUT News - Fair Play for Children in Wales
Fair Play for Children in Wales
“Wales has now enjoyed ten years of devolved government and significant positive changes have been made to education provision. However, there remain significant funding difficulties that require urgent action if Wales is to achieve its stated goal of securing world class education provision for its youngsters. NUT Cymru will continue to campaign for fair funding. Our members and the children they teach deserve the best.”
Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers
NUT Cymru has repeatedly highlighted the differences in funding provision between Wales and England. Per pupil funding inWales is, on average, £496 per year less than in England.
The draft budget for 2010, published in October, offers no opportunity to close that gap. If this budget is approved and ratified by the Assembly, education in Wales will see a decrease in funding in real terms. Schools will be unable to provide an adequate service for their pupils and communities. Teachers’ jobs will be threatened. Class sizes will increase. Resources will be cut. Standards will fall. The NUT is campaigning against this injustice. Our young people deserve better. Make a stand now for fair funding in Wales.
“Funding arrangements conspire against the objective of providing a world class education service for children in Wales. Schools struggle. Jobs are lost. Pupils suffer. When the Assembly debates the current budget proposals, Members should think of the future of education in Wales.”
David Evans – Secretary NUT Cymru
