UNICEF WELCOMES ISRAEL'S RELEASE OF PALESTINIAN CHILD DETAINEES New York, Dec 19 2011 2:05PM
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) welcomed the release of 55 Palestinian child detainees by Israel yesterday as part of a prisoner swap deal struck two months ago, and said it looked forward to more advancements on this issue.
"We welcome this release of children by the Israeli authorities and we look forward to further progress on the issue of child detainees," http://www.unicef.org/media/media_61042.html said Jean Gough, UNICEF Special Representative in the occupied Palestinian territory.
This is the second round of prisoner releases, following the first exchange on 18 October, when Hamas released the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held captive since June 2006, and Israel released 477 Palestinian prisoners - many of whom had been imprisoned for involvement in attacks on Israelis.
As part of the deal, Israel also agreed to release 550 prisoners within the following two months of the first exchange.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called the prisoner exchange a "humanitarian breakthrough" and said he hoped it would have a far-reaching and positive impact on the stalled Middle East peace process.
According to a news release issued by the agency, a total of 161 Palestinians under the age of 18 had been detained by Israeli military authorities as of 1 December. The 55 children who were released are reported to be between the ages of 14 and 17.

Send My Sister to school
Each year millions of teachers and students from around the world remind their leaders of the important promise they made to get every child into school by 2015. And it is working; the number of children out of school is falling. But there are still 67 million children out of school. More than half are girls.
In 2011 the Global Campaign for Education invited UK pupils to become global active citizens. Young people spoke up for girls’ education by creating decorated ‘sister’ characters and messages. The aim was to remind world leaders of their promise on education for all.
Every extra year that a girl gets in school has a great impact on her future. It helps her earn more (to escape poverty), keeps her safe from HIV/AIDS infection, and reduces the risk that her child will die in infancy.
The NUT is an enthusiastic supporter of this campaign.
Click here for the Send My Sister to School Newsletter
The 2012 campaigning theme will link with the Olympics - providing a narrative around a global great education race in which world leaders are urged to 'go for gold' to get every child in school by 2015. This is already proving to be very popular with the schools audience and 2,000 schools have already signed up to date! We also have a very strong programme of parliamentary events and policy work to gain greater influence in Westminster and with policy makers.

NUT Supports the Global union Federations' call to "Protect Human Rights and LGBT Advocates"
The NUT supports the global union federations Education International and Public Services International in their condemnation of the violent murder of David Kato, on January 26 in Kampala, Uganda. Kato, who was a teacher by training, was a lifelong human rights defender, and a vocal opponent of Uganda's proposed "Anti-Homosexuality Bill." This bill seeks to criminalize homosexuality and make it punishable by fine and life imprisonment.
The NUT joins EI and PSI's call on the Ugandan government to launch an immediate investigation into Kato's tragic death and to bring those responsible to justice. Further, we support EI and PSI's call on the government to withdraw the anti-homosexuality Bill, and to provide education and legal protection to prevent violence and discrimination against Uganda's human rights activists, and gay, lesbian and transgender activists and their supporters.
The NUT offers condolences to his family, friends and the local LGBT community.
We pledge to continue to promote the respect of human rights, including sexual orientation and gender identity, because this is a cause for freedom, dignity, equality and social justice.
