Crazy about work - an investigation and commentary on work-related factors influencing teachers’ mental health
The Nottingham City Association surveyed a random sample of members to find out more about teachers’ mental health and work related factors that are potential causes of stress. The survey has been conducted and analysed by John Illingworth, previous President of the Union and long time officer of Nottingham City.
The survey responses provide some stark reminders of the pressure under which our members are working and underline the importance of the Union’s ongoing workload campaign as well as other related work on stress and support for members.
The guidance in this document is not intended as a substitute for direct intervention by the NUT in cases where members are already suffering mental or physical illness attributable to stress. In such cases divisions and associations will be aware that, the NUT advises its members immediately to contact their local NUT secretary or NUT regional office in England, or NUT Cymru in Wales, for support and assistance. Members facing such problems are furthermore advised to keep a written record of specific incidents or factors which have contributed to their experience of work-related stress, and to ensure that they seek and follow medical advice where appropriate.
