Commenting upon today’s announcement that Leighton Andrews is to continue as Minister for Education and Skills in the Welsh Assembly Government, Wales Secretary David Evans said:
"The NUT notes the return of Mr Andrews and looks forward to working with him in the coming weeks, months and years. This reappointment comes as no surprise and we are looking forward especially to securing an opportunity to sit down with the Minister as representatives of the NUT in Wales to discuss in detail his recently published proposals for the future of our education service following his key note speech in February.
"Wales has some of the finest and most dedicated education professionals who all want the same thing in establishing a world class education service for Welsh children. Whilst we may have differences of opinion regarding the best way to achieve that aim it is important that we have the opportunity to discuss and be consulted upon any changes that are both proposed and are being implemented.
"Mr Andrews has already shown during the last 18 months that he is committed to change. As a union the NUT has no objection to that change provided we have an involvement and opportunity to contribute for and on behalf of our members and, of course, our pupils.
"I will be contacting Mr Andrews so that we can hopefully agree an early date to meet. There are numerous issues to be discussed and the sooner we can do so the better."
