Back Off Backing Bridge: Pearson AGM Action

Bridge International is one of the largest education for-profit companies in the world, operating in Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, India and Liberia. Its schools use unqualified staff delivering a scripted standardised curriculum in poor facilities – all with the aim of maximising profits. In Uganda and Kenya, Bridge schools have been ordered to shut because the company has breached education laws. Fees charged of some of the world’s poorest parents exploit the aspirations of pupils and undermine what is the universal right to a free, high-quality public education. The NEU joined international allies in early May 2018 to lobby the AGM of publishing firm Pearson, asking them to end their support for Bridge. Colleagues from Education International and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) joined the Union, and the Deputy Chair of Kenya’s Education Committee attended as an observer. A video of the demonstration is available here.
