Debs Gwynn

Julia Simpkins says “Debs seems to be the go to person on so many issues. She tirelessly attends meetings all over the North West. Thank you.”

I joined the NUT on my PGCE course and was already interested in politics and trade unionism. Within three years of qualifying, I moved to a school where the NUT rep was retiring. I was the only person interested in taking on the role and so began my involvement with the NUT.

I have been Equalities Officer in two different divisions, President in three and am currently membership secretary in Halton NUT. I am also the North West representative on the LGBT+ Advisory Committee.

I think it is crucial to have activists in trade unions as they encourage teachers to become engaged in the union and ensure that it remains lay led. Reforms only come about through campaigning and action.
