NUT guidance on local negotiating machinery (July 2005)

Pay and conditions of service for sixth form college teachers are negotiated at national level in the Committee for Teaching Staff of the NJC for Sixth Form Colleges. There are matters which are left to local determination and other issues for consultation at college level in addition to the adoption of national recommendations on pay and conditions of service. There is thus a need for local machinery to deal with all these items. The three teacher organisations unanimously have agreed the attached model machinery for local use on consultation and negotiation. Below is a commentary highlighting the salient points. Where no local machinery exists, it is essential that such machinery is established using the model as a basis. Even where machinery does exist, it may need to be adapted to reflect the particular regulations for sixth form colleges. The employers were not prepared to enter into any agreement nationally on local machinery and it has therefore been agreed among the teacher organisations only.
