The NUT Benevolent Fund
The NUT Benevolent Fund was established in 2015 to provide financial assistance to NUT members when they have suffered sickness, accident or injury, unemployment or bereavement. Most grants will be to assist with short term financial emergencies so that essential but unaffordable goods or services can be paid for. More substantial applications will also be considered in cases of serious need and misfortune. The NUTBF is available to all members and dependants of members who have been in full membership for at least one year. More information about the NUTBF.
NUT legal services - a member's guide
As an NUT member, you have access to a unique form of legal service provision. It is a team of solicitors and litigation executives, working only for the NUT and its members, professionally regulated by the Law Society and committed to high quality service provision. This team works under the name of "NUT Solicitors".
This document gives you information on how we consider applications for legal assistance and the basis upon which we act.
The Union has four collective policies underwritten by Aviva. These policies provide automatic cover for members, subject to terms and conditions, in respect of four separate areas of risk.
• Personal accident
This policy provides compensation in respect of death or bodily injury resulting solely and directly from an accident caused by violent external and visible means. All members, other than retired and left profession members, paying the appropriate subscription, newly qualified members, student members, and members through schemes negotiated with other associations, are covered by this policy. The insurance provides cover for members 24 hours a day, at home or abroad.
This policy provides compensation of £50 per day (excess 24 hours) up to a maximum of 365 days for a member who has been injured as a result of an occupational accident which leads to that person being admitted to hospital as an in-patient. The policy includes accidents happening outside school so long as they occur in connection with school activity or NUT business. A journey to or from work is also covered. The policy is subject to certain exceptions. Please see the Personal Accident policy.
• Personal property (inc spectacles)
Personal property belonging to members of the National Union of Teachers, or pupils' personal property entrusted to them, is automatically insured under a collective policy taken out by the Union against loss or damage by flood, fire, theft or malicious act whilst on the school premises.
• Malicious damage to motor vehicles in school or college premises
Cover up to a maximum of £500 for malicious damage to a member's private car or motorcycle while on school premises during the time the member is on school or Union business (excess £50). This enables members to protect their no claim discount for small malicious damage claims by not approaching their motor insurers. No claim may be made under this policy if the member intends to claim for the same incident under another policy.
How to claim
Members wishing to claim under any of these benefits other than assistance from the NUTBF should contact Union headquarters as soon as possible – tel. 020 7380 4785. Members wishing to apply to the NUTBF should email NUTBF@nut.org.uk.

New for 2010 – The Utility Warehouse Discount Club
The NUT is delighted to introduce the Utility Warehouse Discount Club. Committed to adding value to your NUT membership, we have become an Independent Representative for the Utility Warehouse, which has a fine reputation for providing their members with great value, great savings and the best possible customer service with their award-winning UK-based customer service team.

The Utility Warehouse provides over 300,000 customers throughout the UK with substantial savings on a wide range of utility services including home phone, mobile, broadband, gas, electricity and non-geographic numbers.
The Utility Warehouse Discount Club is operated by Telecom plus PLC, a major British company, listed on the London Stock Exchange. Telecom plus was named ‘Company of the Year’ at the PLC Awards in 2009.
You may not have heard of the Utility Warehouse Discount Club before, as they do not advertise. The Utility Warehouse doesn’t have any high street shops, their systems are very efficient and they don’t waste their customers’ money on expensive advertising campaigns on TV or in the National Press. This means they can afford to charge their customers less than their competitors do for the same services. Instead they rely on satisfied customers letting their friends and family know about the great
value services they deliver.
The Utility Warehouse don’t do introductory offers to entice new customers that suddenly go up in price after a few months. All their members benefit from consistently good value and great customer service at all times, for as long as they remain a customer.
Why the Utility Warehouse Discount Club?
The NUT wants to ensure you have access to great value products and services and make savings against your everyday utilities. Using the Utility Warehouse’s great range of products and services, you can shrink your bills.

When self-employed members face problems of the kind they would face as employed teachers, for example, false accusations made against them by their students or accidents in the course of their work for which someone else is liable, the NUT provides the same assistance.
However, self employed members have additional and different issues with which they have to deal. Some things we cannot deal with in exchange for a membership subscription. We cannot, for example, extend our support and assistance to a self employed member's business or company legal affairs.
We can, however, assist in relieving self employed members of some of the costs associated with their businesses. One of these costs is insurance.
Union membership alone does not provide insurance cover for professional indemnity (cover for financial loss resulting from advice or services given by a professional for a fee) and public liability (the legal liability owed to any third party as a result of negligence relating to the business and its activities e.g. a client being injured on the member's premises). We can, however, offer preferential premiums for this type of insurance through an arrangement with an insurance specialist, the Alan Boswell Group.
The NUT has asked the Alan Boswell Group to develop a policy to protect self employed members by offering a combined public liability and professional indemnity policy at significantly reduced premiums, starting at £50 a year. This policy will provide cover for legal defence costs and awards of compensation in respect of legal liability.
To keep premium costs down the scheme is transacted fully online. For full details and to take out a policy simply click on to the Alan Boswell Group website at www.alanboswell.com/nut.
Alan Boswell Insurance Brokers Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.

*If for any reason your refund is under £38, you will have nothing more to pay.
For all work related matters the Union provides a high quality, award winning legal support service for members.
We have joined with Thompsons Solicitors, the UK's most experienced personal injury and trade union law firm, to provide a service for a fee for legal matters outside work in the following areas: personal injury, will writing, probate, powers of attorney and conveyancing.
Members and family member personal injury cases are funded by a conditional fee agreement which means that the injured person doesn't have to pay anything. Unlike many solicitors, Thompsons is expert at dealing with complex personal injury claims. Because Thompsons refuses as a point of principle to work for insurance companies, it is never compromised into settling a claim for less than the full value.

On 01 June 2016 LV=, the UK’s largest friendly society and a leading financial mutual completed a deal to transfer in the business engagements of Teachers Provident Society (which traded as Teachers Assurance). Existing Teachers Assurance policies will continue with the same terms and conditions. When your Policy is due to mature, or comes up for renewal you will be contacted by LV= and have the opportunity to purchase a similar product from LV= (please note this excludes unit trusts which Teachers Assurance transferred to Columbia Threadneedle Investments).
