Resistance in Latin America

3 April 2018

Commenting after the debate on Motion 59, Kevin Courtney, General Secretary of the NUT section of the National Education Union, said:

“The people and educators of Latin America are currently facing unprecedented challenges. From mass privatisation in Chile to human rights abuses in Mexico and Colombia, as well as international sanctions on Venezuela and Cuba, the situation for students and teachers in the region has rarely been more difficult.

“I am pleased that the Union has long had, and continues to exhibit, strong support for colleagues in Latin America. We must continue to fight for their human and trade union rights, now more than ever.

“The Union will continue to consider Latin America a priority region for international solidarity, working closely with colleagues across a number of unions, organisations and campaigns to combat oppressive regimes and neo-liberal policies. Our voice is powerful and our commitment unwavering.”
